How to do a Back to Blind With Style – by Paula Novotna

Want to learn how Paula Novotna does a proper back to blind with style? She shares her secrets with you to help you improve.

The Back to Blind is one of my favourite tricks. Back in the day it took me some time to learn it but at the moment I like it a lot and I do it different ways as well to make it more interesting. I tweak the back roll more to look more stylish. I add grabs or I just continue the rotations and do a KGB. So let’s have a look at how to start with this trick if you haven’t tried it yet.

Let me tell you few steps you need to do to learn a nice Back to Blind.

First you have to know how to ride unhooked and do a railey and of course a railey to blind. If you know these tricks very well you can advance to the Back to blind. There is no point of learning back to Blind, before the railey to Blind, so stick to the steps and advice and it will be easier for you.

1. Learn how to do a unhooked backroll

First step is to learn a nice unhooked backroll. When you unhook, go a little bit downwind, just to keep the speed and edge hard, keep focused on where you have the kite, it should be on 11 o’clock, all the time.

As soon as you manage to do many and I say it again MANY nice backrolls you can start trying to turn to blind. The rotation is similar like in the railey to blind but it will be a bit confusing in the beginning.

2. Redirect your kite when you turn to blind

Just before you turn to blind and just before you let go with your front hand think about pulling the kite a bit down, that you will do with your front hand. Like this you will make sure the kite will stay at 10-11 o’ clock and won’t go up. If the kite is at this position it’s way easier to pass the bar. If its at 12 o’ clock it’s very difficult.

3. Add your own style

With Back to Blind you can play a lot and think about different ways to do it. Personally I like to over rotate the backroll to almost 540 and go back to blind, it looks super stylish. And it’s also a trick people like to see a lot from me.

When you feel comfortable with your back to blind you can start adding grabs. It’s way easier to grab with the back hand as you have to control the kite with your front hand, so better start with that.

If you want to know the difference between what I do when I go for a Back to Blind, a Back to Blind air-pass and a KGB it’s very simple. If I do back to blind, I wait a bit longer to go to blind and the trick doesn’t have to be that radical. There is a lot of time in the air to make it more stylish.

Going to Back to blind air pass you need to have a little bit of speed, and edge harder and turn faster to catch the bar in the air.

To do a nice KGB, it helps to go a little bit more downwind so you let the kite slack more during the trick. Edge really hard, as hard as you can and turn to land heel side again but this has to be very fast after doing the backroll.
