How to do a Kiteloop – By Liloo Gringa

If you think you are ready to try your first kiteloop then you should definitely listen to Liloo’s advice to be sure to master the move without hurting yourself.

What is a kiteloop? A kiteloop is a complete turn of the kite on itself. It is a freestyle move where the kite makes a complete rotation during the jump. A kiteloop is always done by pulling the back hand while pushing the front hand (the opposite of a downloop).

Please, do not start your first kiteloops in 40 knots, choose a more manageable wind strength to start where you are on a 9m to 11m kite (this will let you turn the kite fast enough, but not so fast it send you into orbit).

Let’s start with kiteloops and later we can get into megaloops.

You should already be able to...

  • Have good kite control
  • Master the high jump
  • Master a kiteloop without jumping: I strongly advise you to start making your first kiteloops while body dragging: put your kite at the zenith, then pull your back hand while pushing your front hand. Once the kite has made its rotation, hold it at the zenith and do the exercise again.
If you control the move, then you can go into the next step: making kiteloops while riding (same process).

Are you ready ? It is time for kiteloops whilst jumping!

Step 1: Go high

Start by performing a fairly high jump by launching your kite to the zenith.. Shift your hand back towards the end of the bar to allow the kite to rotate faster.

Step 2: Start your kiteloop

Once you have reached the peak of your jump (kite to the zenith), sharply pull your back hand while pushing your front hand. From the time the kiteloop is launched, do not stop pulling the bar until the kite has completed the loop and is heading back up to 12 again.

If you stop the rotation halfway before it is finished you WILL hurt yourself. So no hesitation!

Step 3: Re-power your kite

When the kite has completed its 360, push away your bar  slightly (this will allow the kite to re-power and reach the zenith quicker in order to catch you).

Step 4: Prepare and spot your landing

Once the kite is re-powered to the zenith, reposition your back hand at the centre of the bar and prepare to land. Place the board as downwind as possible to allow a smooth reception.

Bonus advice

Start by making “small kiteloops ” to control the move .

The important thing is to improve safely without getting hurt . The more you do, the more you’ll master the kiteloop .

Once you are comfortable you can begin to make bigger and bigger loops until reaching the level that you can justifiably call it a MEGALOOOOOOOOP!
