Why You Are Never Too Cool To Ride Old School

Why You Are Never Too Cool To Ride Old School

Don’t forget how good it is to launch yourself into the air trying to get higher and higher with finesse and perfect control of your kite.

It seems recently like so much of kiteboarding it is about freestyle and wake/park style riding and we seem to have completely forgotten how good it is to launch yourself into the air trying to get higher and higher with finesse and perfect control of your kite.

One of the best examples of female riders doing amazing old school tricks is our friend Angely Bouillot. Have you heard of her or seen her riding? It is just amazing to see how much this girl is in control and knows exactly where her kite is in the air. She’s got an amazing style and we advise you to watch her riding.

So whilst there is of course a lot of satisfaction in emulating tricks from other sports such as wakeboarding, don’t forget what makes kiteboarding unique and why a lot of us were drawn to it in the beginning.

1. Go back to straps

Go back to straps and start doing those amazing one or no foot board-offs.

Pauline Valesa is also a good example and has got some amazing shots while she is flying high in the air.

2. Learn how to get the perfect timing for jumping

It is not easy and takes hard work and practice and a lot of dedication as you will try over and over to get the perfect timing.

It is about the perfect combination between sending the kite, body position, loading and popping and while it may not be easy, once you get it you will have one of the best feelings that kitesurfing can give you.

3. Ride old school in all types of conditions

You can work on your skills in all types of conditions and it doesn’t matter if you are a bit over powered. You don’t have to worry so much about having the perfect size kite for the moment or the perfect flat water conditions.

If the wind is a bit gusty and you don’t really want to attempt too many freestyle moves then just focus on your high jumps or on your stylish transitions instead.

4. Feeling not brave enough to crash really hard?

Whilst you can of course still crash pretty hard if you totally loose the control of your kite, most of the time this kind of riding is more forgiving and with good kite control you should be coming down a lot softer even if you haven’t got your board back on your feet in time.

You don’t have to unhook in 25knots when you can just focus on becoming an expert of long held, tweaked out and stylish grabs instead.

5. Get the perfect pictures

You can really get nice shots whilst you’re fly high in the air. Work on your grabs, work on your one foots or on your back or front rotations and you will get some of those beautiful shots that you dream about.
